Local products will be in the spotlight in Béziers on May 31, 2024. To mark the Fête des vins IGP de l'Hérault, we focus on this little-known appellation.

This is the second year that the Hérault PGI wine federation has organized this festival. Here, local producers take pride of place. After a rather successful first edition, the organization has decided to repeat the experience. The organizers are hoping to pulverize last year's figures, with over 3,000 visitors. Admission will be free, and access to the tastings will cost 8 euros, with a 2 euro supplement for an additional wine. They will also be launching a new concept called "Marguerite". A traveling caravan designed to highlight the work of winegrowers.

What is a PGI and what role does it play?

The appellation literally means: Protected Geographical Indication. It was created in 1992 by the European Union. Initially intended for specific food products, its scope was broadened to include wine in 2009. More specifically, this qualification guarantees a product's origin, quality, reputation, place and method of production. It's an important way for producers to certify their products, giving them credibility and a competitive edge in the marketplace.

In France, the PGI has replaced the term "Vin de Pays", but the objective is similar. This festival is therefore an opportunity to highlight the work of local producers. It's also a way for the region's winemakers to showcase their work to local residents, and to promote work that respects precise specifications. The event kicks off at 6 p.m. at the Domaine de Bayssan in Béziers. Musical entertainment is provided by the Banda Mescalis and the Paul Selmer orchestra.
